Hello guys

I am about to buy my nephew this PW 80 in a very good condition.
Problem with the seller is that he said it has been on the road since
the end of 2002, so he is selling it as 2003.
Since we r in Israel, and these bikes r not legally imported, we dont
have the papers for this bike.
I was wondering, is there a list somewhere where I can find the year
model just by the VIN?

Many thanks
Rinat

If you look at the front tube of the frame, just below the handlebars and
behind the front number plate, you will see the manufacture date. It will
be one off from the model year. If it sais something like 04/2001 then it
will be a 2002 model year. Also, you can call yamaha with the vin and
they will tell you the model.

Read the VIN from right to left going back 8 digits. The 8th digit tells
you the year model.
0 is 2000, 1 is 2001, etc. Prior to the year 2000 there will be a letter
there. I don't have my codes in front of me (maybe try NADA's web site) but
it works this way Z is 99, Y is 98, etc.. Not all letters are used trying
to avoid possible confusion. No O's, I think maybe B/P/R are excluded, that
kind of thing.

Close but not quite. The 10th digit (counting from the left) is the
year designation. 2000 is a "0", 2001 is a "1", 2002 is a "2" and so
on. The letter designations are, starting from 1980- A, B, C, D, E, F,
G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, V, W, and X respective ly with A
being 1980 and X being 1999.

This applies to all vehicles having a 17 digit VIN.

But Mark... The 10th digit from the left *is* the 8th from the right. We
both go to the same place on the VIN, I just get there 2 digits sooner...

As for the other, I admitted to not having the code in front of me, sheesh.
;)

I know. But if someone not familiar starts trying to remember which
digit, that can add to the confusion. I think I can wait the extra two
digits.

No problem. I was just trying to show which letters got skipped.

I guess my point of view comes from work. Trying to save even a sec or two
every chance I get. You know how that is...

So do you have it memorized or have a cheat sheet with you? I've got them
taped to the monitors on the counter and at the service desk. That way we
can glance at them as we need to instead of trying to remember it.

I have them memorized. I deal with that stuff everyday.

That's no good! If you count over 10 digits, you don't have anything left
to use to point at the number, unless you...nevermind.

OK, there was a 2002 PW 80 for sale in eBay.
the VIN there was JYA3RV0311A018217.
According to you guys, the years should be 2001. The seller wrote it is 2002.
Was he mistaken?

I would guess that the bike was manufactured in 2001 as
a 2002 model.

No, then it would have a 10th digit as a "2". The guy was either told
wrong when he bought it or he's trying to pull a fast one. The nice
thing about the 10th digit year designation is it takes the guesswork
out of when manufacturing began for each year.
